persephone

-
Through Polaroid and 35mm film, this series reinterprets the myth of Persephone's cyclical journey between light and shadow. The work focuses specifically on moments of transition, capturing the nuances of transformation as the goddess moves between worlds, reflecting themes of duality and cyclical change through careful composition and lighting. The recreation of this ancient tale through the lens of contemporary photography connects timeless mythological themes with modern expressions of identity and change.

The series merges two distinct analog processes to create its mythological narrative: Kodak Gold 200, chosen for its rich shadow detail and warm highlights that emphasize the golden quality of sunlight, and Polaroid 600 film, whose immediate development process and distinctive color palette add temporal complexity to the story. Metal crowns and head jewelry are captured with intentional lens flare to create ethereal halos, while pomegranates are photographed in various states – from whole to split open – serving as both prop and metaphor. The Polaroids provide immediate, intimate moments that contrast with the more composed 35mm frames, creating a visual dialogue between spontaneity and deliberation.
